Maths
At Bousfield, we believe mathematics is not only a vital life skill but also a subject of beauty, creativity and wonder. Mathematics helps pupils make sense of the world, see patterns, and develop logical thinking that will serve them throughout their lives.
Our approach is rooted in mastery. Every child should develop a deep, secure understanding of mathematical concepts before moving on. Lessons balance three key elements, fluency, reasoning and problem solving, so that pupils can recall facts quickly, explain their thinking, and apply knowledge flexibly to new situations.
We place strong emphasis on fluency in number and arithmetic, as this provides the foundation for success in all areas of maths. Children are taught to use and recall their times tables with confidence, recognising them as essential tools for higher-level mathematical thinking.
To secure understanding, pupils are encouraged to use a wide range of manipulatives and visual representations. These practical resources, such as counters, cubes and number lines, help children grasp abstract concepts and bridge the gap between concrete experience and symbolic reasoning.
Reasoning is at the heart of our curriculum. Children are challenged to explain, justify and prove their ideas, as well as to make connections across different areas of mathematics. Problem solving opportunities are woven through lessons so that pupils learn to apply their skills in meaningful, often real-life, contexts.
Throughout, we celebrate the beauty and wonder of mathematics, from the elegance of patterns in nature to the creativity of exploring multiple solutions. We want our pupils to see maths not only as a tool for success but also as a subject to enjoy and take pride in.
Our ultimate aim is that every child leaves Bousfield as a confident, fluent and flexible mathematician, equipped to thrive in the next stage of their education and to approach the world with curiosity and critical thinking.
