Learning in Nature

We are fortunate to be blessed with a large, green school site, and we make the most of it to enrich teaching and learning in every year group. We believe children learn best when they are connected to the natural world, and our grounds provide daily opportunities to explore, discover, and grow.

From the very start of school, pupils experience the changing seasons through Year 1’s dedicated “Season Weeks,” immersing themselves in the sights, sounds, and rhythms of nature. Our allotment and outdoor kitchen allow children to plant, harvest, and cook fresh produce, while our school chickens and bees give pupils the chance to take responsibility for caring for living things and to see first-hand the importance of sustainability.

This year marks the beginning of our Forest School journey. We are proud to have two classroom-based members of staff who have completed Forest School accreditation. They are working alongside teachers to support the planning of sessions and are developing a progressive scheme of work that will grow with the school. While still in its early stages, Forest School is already offering pupils valuable opportunities to explore, take risks, and learn new skills in a natural setting.

We also dedicate a full curriculum week each year to nature, sustainability, and global responsibility. Through outdoor projects, themed learning, and whole-school activities, pupils are encouraged to see themselves as global citizens and stewards of the planet.

Our outdoor learning is not an optional extra but a vital part of our curriculum. It nurtures curiosity, builds resilience, and develops creativity, while fostering a lifelong respect for the environment.
