Bousfield Primary School

Geography

At Bousfield, Geography helps children develop an understanding of the world around them, from our local community to countries, cultures and environments across the globe. As a school with families from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds, Geography provides valuable opportunities for children to share experiences, explore different perspectives and learn about the diverse world in which we live.

A particular strength of Geography at Bousfield is our Map Mastery programme. Throughout the school, children develop increasingly sophisticated map-reading skills using aerial photographs, atlases, Ordnance Survey maps and digital resources. These skills are revisited and built upon year by year, helping pupils become confident and capable geographers.

Our local area provides a rich starting point for geographical learning. Through fieldwork, map work and first-hand observation, children explore the neighbourhood around the school before broadening their understanding to topics such as rivers, rainforests, climate, natural disasters and global trade. Geography is also celebrated through our curriculum weeks, including Blue Planet Week, where pupils explored oceans, rivers and seas through a range of engaging activities.

We are proud of a curriculum that reflects both the diversity of our school community and the wider world. Through Geography, children develop curiosity, respect and environmental responsibility. Our aim is that every child leaves Bousfield with strong geographical knowledge, confident map-reading skills and a lifelong interest in the people, places and environments that shape our planet.
