Design Technology
At Bousfield, Design and Technology is a highly valued subject that encourages children to become creative thinkers, problem-solvers and innovators. Our curriculum has been carefully designed to provide a clear progression of knowledge, skills and technical understanding from the Early Years through to Year 6. Children learn to follow the full design process by exploring existing products, developing ideas, creating prototypes, making final products and evaluating their success.
One of the strengths of Design and Technology at Bousfield is the wide range of real-life experiences available to our pupils as well as special projects during special weeks. During Bird Week, pupils designed and made products including bird feeders and mechanical birds, bringing together creativity, engineering and environmental awareness.
We are fortunate to have an allotment, extensive outdoor spaces and an outdoor kitchen, which provide meaningful opportunities for children to grow, harvest and prepare their own produce. These experiences help children develop an understanding of where food comes from and the journey from field to plate. Our pupils also work closely with Chef Cris during Year 6 bread-making projects, applying their knowledge of food preparation, nutrition and product development in an authentic context.

Design and Technology also plays an important role in some of Bousfield's most treasured traditions. Through our Geese and Goslings programme, Year 6 pupils design and create personalised seed bags for their Reception partners, carefully measuring, cutting, sewing and decorating them with individually chosen emblems. This special project brings together technical skills, creativity, mentorship and our commitment to nurturing a love of nature and the outdoors.

Design and Technology provides opportunities for all children to succeed. The subject encourages collaboration, resilience, independence and creative thinking, often allowing children to demonstrate talents that may not be as visible in more traditional classroom subjects. Our aim is that every child leaves Bousfield with the confidence to design, create and solve problems, alongside a lifelong appreciation of how ideas can be transformed into purposeful products.
